Mowing on the valley floor
Supreme Mowing has been mowing lawns in Lower Hutt since 2011. The central and eastern suburbs — Hutt Central, Waterloo, Boulcott, Epuni, Avalon, Fairfield, Waiwhetu, Woburn, Naenae and Taita — sit on the flat, fertile floor of the valley beside Te Awa Kairangi (the Hutt River). That soil grows grass fast, especially from September through December, and the valley floor holds moisture and cold: it's often a couple of degrees colder than Wellington city on a winter morning, with frosts that Petone and the bays don't get.
For a lawn, that means a long growing season with a strong spring flush, a soft, wet surface through winter, and a real risk of scalping or rutting if it's mown too low or too heavy when the ground is saturated. We mow Lower Hutt lawns a little higher in the wet months, keep the blades sharp so the cut heals cleanly, and pick the day when the ground is firm enough.
Lower Hutt sections and what they need
Housing across these suburbs runs the full range, and the lawns follow suit:
- Woburn, Boulcott and parts of Waterloo — larger established sections with mature trees, hedges and formal beds. Edging, leaf clearing in autumn and hedge shaping matter as much as the mow. See garden maintenance.
- Epuni, Avalon, Fairfield, Waiwhetu — classic family sections, often with a decent back lawn, a front strip and a berm. Fortnightly mowing keeps these looking sharp for most of the year.
- Naenae, Taita, Wingate and Pomare — 1940s–60s state-house era sections, many now rentals, with generous lawns that get away quickly if nobody is on top of them. We do a lot of rental grounds and between-tenancy cleanups here.
- Hutt Central and Waterloo infill — new townhouses with small shared lawns and narrow planted strips, often looked after under a body corporate. Tidy finish, small machines, careful with the neighbours.
