Small sections, done neatly
Petone, Alicetown and Moera are old suburbs on the flat at the bottom of the valley — worker's cottages, villas and bungalows on narrow sections, increasingly joined by townhouses and apartments. Lawns here are small: a front strip, a back lawn the size of a living room, a berm on the street. The job isn't about acreage, it's about finish. Crisp edges along the path and fence, weedeating tight into the corners, and the footpath and driveway blown clean, so a small lawn reads as cared-for rather than merely cut.

Wind, salt and sand
The southerly comes straight off the harbour onto the Esplanade and the streets behind it. Gardens close to the beach deal with salt burn on the seaward side of hedges and shrubs, sandy free-draining soil that dries out fast in summer, and a steady supply of wind-blown debris. Shelter hedges matter, and keeping them dense from the base up is a priority when we trim.
