Hedges
Supreme Mowing trims hedges of all sizes across the Hutt Valley — boundary hedges, driveway hedges, the low box and buxus around beds, and the big griselinia, pittosporum and photinia screens that Hutt Valley sections rely on for shelter from the wind. We cut them level, keep the faces vertical (or slightly tapered so the bottom gets light), and take every trimming away.
Most hedges here want two cuts a year: one after the spring flush in late November or December, and one in late summer or early autumn before growth slows. Fast growers like griselinia and escallonia can take three. We can put your hedges on a schedule so they're never the thing you're embarrassed about.
Shrubs and light tree trimming
Shaping and height reduction on shrubs and small trees; lifting canopies so you can walk under them; clearing branches away from the roof, gutters, windows and fences; thinning overgrown feijoas, camellias and flowering cherries; tidying up pohutukawa and natives that have outgrown their spot. We prune with the plant's season in mind, so flowering shrubs are cut after they flower rather than before.
What we don't do is large tree felling, work at height that needs a rope-and-harness climb, or anything near power lines. That's arborist work and we'll tell you straight if your job needs one.
Wind, shelter and the Hutt Valley
Shelter hedges do a lot of work in the Hutt Valley. Petone and Eastbourne gardens take salt-laden southerlies off the harbour; the western hills and Upper Hutt get the full northerly. A hedge that's kept dense from the base up is what protects the rest of the garden — so we're careful not to cut so hard that the bottom goes bare. Where a hedge has been let go and is leggy, we'll talk through whether a hard renovation cut will work for that species or whether it's time to replace it.
