A different climate at the top of the valley
Upper Hutt is only twenty minutes up the valley from Petone, but the lawns behave differently. It's further from the sea, so summers are hotter and drier and winters colder — Trentham, Totara Park and Te Marua get proper frosts, and a lawn that's browned off in February will be sitting under white grass in July. Growth is explosive in spring and early summer, slows hard in a dry January, then comes back with the autumn rain.
We adjust for that: shorter intervals in October–December, a higher cut through the dry weeks so the grass shades its own roots, and a lighter touch on frosted mornings when the blades snap rather than bend.
Bigger sections, longer mows
Sections in Upper Hutt are generally larger than in Lower Hutt. Totara Park, Te Marua, Maoribank and Brown Owl have a lot of quarter-acre-plus properties; the edges of town run into lifestyle blocks and paddock-sized lawns. That changes the job — more open mowing, more boundary weedeating along fences and hedgerows, and more clippings to remove. We quote these by the lawn, so a big section gets a fair price for what it actually is rather than an hourly rate that drifts.
Silverstream, Pinehaven and Heretaunga are older, leafier suburbs with established gardens, tall hedges and mature trees — hedge trimming and autumn leaf clearing are a big part of the work there. Trentham, Wallaceville and Elderslea are more mixed, with plenty of family homes and rentals close to the racecourse and the town centre.
