Why Wainuiomata lawns grow so fast
Wainuiomata sits in its own valley behind the eastern hills, with the Remutaka ranges catching the weather. It gets noticeably more rain than Lower Hutt, the soil is rich, and the valley is sheltered from the worst of the wind. Put those together and you get lawns that grow harder and longer than anywhere else we work. A fortnight in October can look like a month elsewhere in the Hutt.
So for Wainuiomata we lean towards shorter intervals through spring and early summer, and we're realistic about it: if a lawn is on a three-week cycle here it will be long by the third week, and we'd rather tell you that than scalp it to compensate.
Family sections and back yards
Wainuiomata's suburbs — Homedale, Arakura, Parkway, Glendale, Fernlea — were mostly laid out from the 1950s to the 1970s with generous sections, so back lawns here are big by modern standards: room for a trampoline, a vege patch and still plenty to mow. Many back onto bush or reserves, which means the boundary weedeating matters (gorse, blackberry and bracken creep in fast) and there's a steady drift of leaves and twigs to deal with. Streets closer to the hills have sloping back sections that need a careful hand.
We do a lot of straightforward, regular lawn mowing here for families who'd rather have their weekends back, and a lot of one-off cleanups for sections that have got away over a wet spring.
Rentals and older residents
Wainuiomata has a strong mix of long-term homeowners — many now at an age where a big lawn is a burden — and rental properties. We look after both: a regular visit that keeps an older resident's section under control without them lifting a finger, and rental grounds care for landlords and property managers, with photos after each visit if you're not local.
