A side valley with its own conditions
Stokes Valley runs up its own narrow valley off the main Hutt, with steep bush-covered sides and streets that climb in loops and cul-de-sacs. Sections often step up or down from the road, back lawns are on a slope, and many properties have bush or reserve on at least one boundary. Because the valley walls are close, a lot of lawns are in shade for part of the day — cooler, damper and mossier than their equivalents on the Lower Hutt flats, and slower to dry out after rain.
That affects how we mow: we pick our days so the slope is dry enough to work safely, cut a fraction higher where the lawn is shaded so it doesn't thin out, and keep the weedeater working hard along the bush edge where the growth comes from.
Slopes, banks and boundaries
Weedeating and bank work is a bigger share of the job in Stokes Valley than almost anywhere else in the Hutt. Steep banks that can't take a mower, long grass along the back fence, and the gorse, blackberry, bracken and tradescantia that walk in from the bush all need regular attention or they take over. Where a section has been left, a one-off cleanup is often the way to reset it before regular mowing takes over.
The flatter streets near the bottom of the valley, Manor Park and around the shops have more conventional family sections and a good number of rentals; we look after both, including rental grounds for out-of-town landlords.
